weight and performance calculations for the Fairey F.17 Campania
Fairey Campania s/n N2363, probably taken at Isle of Grain. This aircraft may have destroyed a U-Boat on 16th May 1918 after dropping bombs and subsequently spotting an oil slick.
Fairey F.17 Campania
role : light maritime two-seat patrol aircraft, ASW
importance : **
first flight : 16 February 1917 operational : September 1917
country : United-Kingdom
design :
production : 36 aircraft
general information :
First aircraft designed to be used form an aircraft carrier. It could take of from the deck of the carrier Campania. The machine was mounted on a wheeled trolley for take-off from the 200ft long flight deck. The trolley was dropped and could be recovered. So it was no longer needed to hoist the aircraft upon the water. Take Off was without aid of a catapult. First aircraft was F.16 fitted with 250 hp RR Eagle IV engine, followed by the F.17 with 275 hp RR Eagle V engine. The F.22 used the 260 hp Sunbeam Maori engine. Later F.17’s had 345 hp RR Eagle VIII engines.
36 F.17 have been built and 25 F.22’s
